Volume profile

How much traded at each price, as bars across the chart. Four kinds, all built only from bars the replay has shown.

The four kinds

  • Volume Profile Visible Range (an indicator): the bars on screen, docked at the right edge (or the left). It redraws as you scroll or zoom, so it always describes what you are looking at.
  • Session Volume Profile (an indicator): one profile per day, or per week, standing at the start of its own session. The newest 40 are drawn.
  • Fixed range volume profile (a drawing, under Forecasting → Volume-based): drag across the bars you want. It stays on those bars.
  • Anchored volume profile (a drawing, same place): click a bar. It covers that bar to the newest and grows as the replay plays.

Reading one

  • The point of control (amber line) is the price with the most volume.
  • The value area is the band round it holding 70% of the volume, drawn stronger, with its high and low as dashed lines. The indicators' gear sets the percentage and the number of rows.
  • Green is volume on up candles and red on down candles. The gear can turn that off for one colour.
  • Naked points of control (Session Volume Profile, on by default): a dashed amber line from each earlier session's point of control to the right edge, for as long as price has not traded back through it. Those are the levels a session left behind untested.
Tick volume

Forex and CFD data carries tick volume (how many price changes), not traded contracts. It follows real activity closely enough for the shape of a profile, so read the shape, not the totals. Where your data has one-minute bars (any import does), a profile is built from the minutes inside each candle, so volume lands on the prices each minute actually traded.
